Sea Clean Dates for 2008

Clean Sea is something we all want….don’t we?

We sometimes wonder. It never ceases to amaze us when we see people drop plastic bags, food wrappers, plastic and glass bottles on the floor, seemingly without a care. Maybe they do it in their own homes too? It is an unnecessary worldwide problem. For tourists and residents alike, it is not pleasant to see and is dangerous to the sea life as well as us! How many children in the world will step on broken glass today?

Wannadive care passionately about our environment and we regularly return from dives with all sorts of stuff in our BCD pockets!

But it isn’t only Man that causes problems. This area is plagued by another invader – Diadema Antillarum. Divers know (and feel!) them as Sea Urchins!

Though an important part of the worldwide aquatic ecology, these critters have upset the balance in the food chain here over last few years, to such a degree that many areas have no fish in sight! A carpet of Urchins has eaten everything that fish rely on.With few natural predators, Urchins are causing havoc.

Following a meeting with the Arona Council, we were asked to participate in a campaign to help rejuvenate the area’s coastline, maintaining its position as a sort of aquatic nature reserve. The Arona coast is protected by a conservation designation SCI Site of Community Importance.

We are blessed with such a diverse range of fish and mammals here; Dolphins, Whales and Turtles are just a small sample of residents that are threatened by pollution. So, Wannadive staff and friends will be scouring the Las Vistas bay area for rubbish of any kind and URCHINS! Normally, it is unacceptable to kill one species to feed another. Our spiny friends are an exception to this rule and make a tasty snack for the other fish that will be eagerly looking forward to our next Clean Sea! We love our Island and its people who have accepted us and become a part of our lives. Visitors to Tenerife are vital to its economy so we must all take responsibility for it’s protection. On a global scale, we want to do our bit to protect the environment for future generations.

To put things in perspective, here’s something that may make you go weak at the knees; According to the National Audubon Society, it is estimated that around 100 million tons of plastic gets dumped in our oceans EVERY YEAR. That’s approximately 206,000 FULL Jumbo Jets. Every year. And remember, this is just plastics. Nothing else.Wannadive are proud to be at the forefront of this campaign and are commited to working with the people of Arona for the good of everyone…..and everything.Anybody wishing to help, please contact us. We aim to do this monthly, time permitting.
